Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?
아름다움이 스스로 그대의 길이 되고 안내자가 되지 않는다면 그대 어떻게 아름다움을 찾아낼 수 있을까요?
And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?
아름다움이 그대 말을 엮어 주지 않는다면 어디서 아름다움을 이야기할 수 있을까요?
The aggrieved and the injured say, “Beauty is kind and gentle. Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us.”
마음이 슬픈 이, 상처 받은 이들은 말합니다. "아름다움은 친절하고 상냥하다. 자신의 행운을 조금은 수줍어하는 젊은 어머니처럼 아름다움은 다소곳이 우리 사이를 거닐고 있어.”
All these things you have said of beauty, yet in truth you speak not of her but of needs unsatisfied.
이 모든 것들이 그대들이 아름다움에 대하여 말해온 것들입니다. 그러나 실로, 이 모든 것들은 아름다움 자체가 아니라 이루지 못한 욕구의 자취를 말한 것일 뿐입니다.
And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.
아름다움은 어떤 욕구가 아닙니다. 아름다움은 황홀경이지요.
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
그것은 마른 입술이나 구걸하러 내민 손이 아닙니다.
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.
아름다움은 활활 타오르는 가슴의 불꽃이며 희열에 잠긴 영혼입니다.
It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
아름다움은 눈으로 볼 수 있는 이미지나 귀로 들을 수 있는 노래가 아닙니다.
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
그것은 차라리 눈 감아도 보이는 이미지요, 귀를 막아도 들을 수 있는 노랫가락입니다.
