Then a hermit, who visited the city once a year, came forth and said,
Speak to us of Pleasure.
And he answered, saying:
Pleasure is a freedom-song
But it is not freedom.
It is the blossoming of your desires,
But it is not their fruit.
It is a depth calling unto a height,
But it is not th deep nor the high.
It is the caged taking wing,
But it is not space encompassed.
Ay, in very truth, pleasure is a freedom-song.
And I fain would have you sing it with fullness of heart;
yet I would not have you lose your hearts in the singing.
그 때 1년에 한번 도시를 방문하는 은둔자가 나와서 물었다.
“쾌락은 무엇인가요?”
알무스타파가 대답했다.
“즐거움은 자유의 노래
하지만 자유 그 자체는 아닌 것.
즐거움은 욕망의 꽃피어남
하지만 그 열매는 아닌 것
즐거움은 계곡이 산봉우리를 향해 부르는 노래
하지만 즐거움은 높지도 낮지도 않네.
그것은 새장에 갇힌 자의 날개짓.
그러나 새장 안을 에워싼 공간이 즐거움은 아닙니다.
그렇습니다. 진실로 즐거움은 자유의 노래입니다.
나는 기꺼이 바랍니다. 그대들이 가득한 가슴으로 즐거움을 노래하길.
하지만 노래하느라 기운을 다 써버리지는 마시기를.”
