칼릴 지브란의 ‘ 예언자(the Prophet)’란 시집에서 발췌한 사랑에 대한 감동적인 글을 실어봅니다.
Then said Almitra, “Speak to us of Love.”
그러자, 알미트라가 말했다. “사랑이란 무엇인가요?”
And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them.
알무스타파가 고개를 들어 사람들을 바라보았다. 잠시 사람들 사이에 정적이 흘렀다.
And with a great voice he said:
마침내 그가 큰 소리로 말했다.
“When love beckons to you, follow him,
사랑이 그대에게 손짓하거든 그 사랑을 따르세요.
Though his ways are hard and steep.
그 길들이 힘들고 가파르다 해도.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
사랑의 날개가 그대를 감쌀 때 그 사랑에게 자신을 내맡기세요.
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
그의 깃털 속에 숨은 칼이 그대에게 상처를 낼지라도.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
사랑이 그대에게 말하거든 그 말을 믿으세요,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
비록, 북풍이 뜰을 폐허로 만들 듯 사랑의 목소리가 그대의 꿈들을 흩뜨려 놓을지라도.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
사랑은 그대에게 영광의 면류관을 세워주지만 십자가를 지우기도 합니다.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
사랑은 그대를 자라게 하지만 그만큼 가지치기도 합니다.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
사랑은 그대 안의 가장 높은 곳까지 올라와 햇볕에 하늘거리는 부드러운 가지를 보듬어 주지만,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
또한 그대 안의 깊은 곳까지 내려와 대지에 엉겨 붙는 뿌리를 뒤흔들기도 합니다.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
사랑은 마치 옥수수 다발을 거두듯 그대를 저에게로 거두어들입니다.
He threshes you to make you naked.”
사랑은 그대를 도리깨질하여 알몸으로 만듭니다.
