On self-knowledge
Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and nights.
그대 가슴은 말 너머에서 밤과 낮의 비밀을 다 압니다.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart’s knowledge.
하지만 귀는 가슴이 알고 있는 바를 소리로 듣고자 갈망합니다.
You would know in words that which you have always know in thought.
이미 마음으로 알고 있는 것을 그대는 말소리로 생생히 알게 되겠지요.
You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.
그대는 꿈의 발가벗은 모습 그대로를 손가락으로 만져보게 되겠지요.
And it is well you should.
그것도 좋은 일입니다.
The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea; and the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.
보이지 않는 영혼의 샘 솟아나 바다로 속삭이며 흘러가야 하지요. 그대의 무한히 깊은 내면에 감추어진 보물도 눈앞에 드러나야 하겠지요.
But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure; And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.
하지만 그대 내면에 있는 미지의 보물이라도 그 무게를 저울에 달아보려 하지는 마세요. 또한 자신이 알고 있는 것의 깊이를 자로 재려 하지 마세요.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.
‘참나’는 끝간 데를 잡을 수 없고 잣대도 들이댈 수 없는 가없는 바다랍니다.
Say not, “I have found the truth,” but rather, “I have found a truth.”
‘나 진리를 다 알았노라’고 하지는 마세요. 차라리 ‘진리의 한 모습만 보았노라’고 말해주세요.
Say not, “I have found the path of the soul.” say rather, “I have met the soul walking on my path.”
‘영혼이 다니는 길을 알아냈노라’고 하지는 마세요. 차라리 ‘나의 길을 걷고 있는 영혼을 만난 적 있노라’고 말해 주세요.
