You work that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth.
우리는 땅님, 그리고 그의 혼과 발맞추어 나가고자 일합니다.
For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons,
게으름 피우는 것은 절기의 변화에 등을 돌리는 일
and to step out of life’s procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.
무한을 향해 당당히 순종하며 나아가는 장엄한 삶의 행렬에서 벗어나게 됩니다.
When you work you are a flute
일을 할 때면 우리는 피리가 됩니다.
through whose heart the whispering of the hours turn to music.
피리의 심장을 통과한 시간의 속삭임은 이제 노래가 됩니다.
Which of you would be a reed, dumb and silent, when all else sings together in unison?
모두가 어울려 한 곡조로 노래할 때 그대들 중 누가 말 못하고 침묵하는 갈대가 되려 할까요?
Always you have been told that the work is a curse and labour a misfortune.
그대들은 늘 일이란 재앙이요 노동은 불행이라고 들어왔을 테지요.
But I say to you that
하지만 나는 말하렵니다.
when you work you fulfill a part of earth’s further dream, assigned to you when that dream was born.
우리가 일하는 것은 땅님의 깊디깊은 꿈의 한 몫을 채우는 것이라고요. 땅님의 꿈이 처음 생겼을 때부터 우리에게 맡겨진 그 몫을.
And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life.
정성스럽게 일을 할 때, 그대는 진실로 삶을 사랑하는 겁니다.
And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life’s inmost secret.
정성스럽게 일하여 삶을 사랑한다는 것은 삶의 가장 내밀한 비밀과 사귄다는 뜻입니다.
