벗이란 서로의 모자람을 채워주는 존재.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
사랑으로 씨를 뿌리고 감사 드리며 수확하는 그대의 밭,
And he is your board and your fireside.
벗은 넉넉한 마음의 식탁이자 따사로운 난로
For you come with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
허기질 때 찾아가서 마음의 평화를 얻을 수 있는 곳이기에.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay”
벗이 속내를 털어놓을 때면 그대 마음에 일어나는 ‘아냐’라는 말 두려워하지도 말고 ‘그래’라는 말 억누르지도 마세요.
And when he is silent your heart cease not to listen to his heart.
벗이 말없이 침묵할 때라도 그대 가슴은 벗의 가슴이 내는 소리를 듣습니다.
For without words, in friendship, all thought, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unclaimed.
벗들끼리는 말 너머, 생각 너머, 바램마저 넘은 곳에서 기대하는 모든 것들이 기쁨으로 태어나고 나누어지기 때문입니다.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
벗과 헤어질 때라도 슬퍼하지는 마세요.
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
산을 타는 이이게 산이 가장 잘 보이는 곳은 산이 아닌 들판이듯 그대가 벗에게서 가장 사랑한 것은 벗이 없을 때 오히려 더욱 또렷하게 드러나는 법.
