칼릴 지브란‘예언자’중 결혼에 관한 이야기다. 결혼을 사랑의 속박으로 삼을 것이 아니라 성숙의 디딤돌이 되게 하여야 한다. 그러기 위해서 둘 사이에 홀로 설 수 있는 넓은 공간이 넘실거려야 한다.

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
그대들은 함께 태어났으니 영원히 함께 해야겠지요.

You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
하얀 죽음의 날개가 그대들의 날들을 흩어버릴 때도.

Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
그대들은 함께 해야겠지요. 고요한 신의 기억 속에서조차.

But let there be space in your togetherness,
함께 하세요. 하지만 안에 넓은 공간이 숨 쉬게 하세요.

And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
낙원의 산들바람 그대 둘 사이에서 한껏 춤추게 하세요.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love;
서로를 사랑하세요. 하지만 사랑으로 속박하지는 마세요.

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
오히려 사랑이 그대 두 영혼의 기슭 사이로 출렁이는 바다이게 하세요.

Fill each other’s cup, but drink not from one cup.
서로의 잔을 채워주세요. 하지만 한 사람의 잔만을 마시진 마세요.

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
서로의 빵을 나누어 주세요. 하지만 한 사람의 빵만을 먹지는 마세요.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
노래하고 춤추며 즐거워하세요. 하지만 그대들 둘 각자 홀로 서기를.

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
함께 울려 화음을 이루지만 제각기 홀로 서 있는 기타 줄처럼.
