Your joy is your sorrow unmasked
기쁨이란 한 꺼풀 벗겨보면 슬픔일 뿐입니다.

And selfsame well from which your laughter rises was often times felled with your tears.
웃음이 솟아나는 그 샘이 종종 눈물로 가득차지요.

And how else can it be?
그럴 수밖에 없지 않을까요?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

우리 존재 속으로 슬픔이 더 깊숙이 파고들수록 기쁨 또한 더 커지는 법입니다.

Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
그대의 포도주를 담고 있는 그 잔이 한때 도공의 가마 속에 굽혀진 바로 그 잔 아니던가요?

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit,
그대 영혼을 달래주는 그 피리가

the very wood that was hollowed with knives.
한때 칼로 후벼 파낸 나무가 아니었던가요.

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart
기쁠 때면, 가슴 깊숙이 들여다보세요.

and shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
그대에게 지금 기쁨을 주고 있는 것은 한때 슬픔을 주었던 바로 그것임을 깨달을 겁니다.

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart,
슬플 때에도 가슴 깊숙이 들여다보세요.

and you shall see that in truth you are weeping that which has been your delight.
이전에 기쁨을 주었던 그것 때문에 지금 그대가 울고 있다는 걸 깨닫게 됩니다.
